What is it?

Phishing attacks remain one of the most widespread and dangerous cyber threats today. Cybercriminals use deceptive emails, text messages, or fake websites to trick users into sharing sensitive information like passwords, credit card numbers, or social security details. These scams often rely on fear, urgency, or curiosity to catch victims off guard. Knowing how to recognize and avoid these attacks is your best defense.

How to identify

One of the most common signs of phishing is poor grammar, unusual phrasing, or misspelled words in an email or message. Legitimate organizations typically proofread communications, so errors can be a red flag. Another warning sign is an urgent call to action, such as “Update your password immediately” or “Claim your refund now!” Scammers use this tactic to pressure victims into acting before thinking.

Additionally, always check the sender’s email address or link destination. Hover over any hyperlinks before clicking to verify they lead to a legitimate site. If something feels off—like a strange domain name or an unexpected request—avoid clicking altogether. Never share sensitive data over email, and when in doubt, contact the organization directly through verified means to confirm any communication.

Phishing attacks have evolved to include more sophisticated methods, like impersonating well-known companies, friends, or coworkers. Be wary of attachments, links, or requests for personal information—even if the message seems to come from someone you trust. Cybercriminals rely on social engineering, so staying alert and skeptical of unexpected communications can protect you.

By educating yourself and others about phishing, you can reduce the risk of falling for these traps. Remember: if something seems too good to be true—or too urgent to ignore—it’s likely a scam. Stay vigilant, and don’t take the bait.
